Step 1: Activate the Yeast
In a small bowl, combine:
1 cup warm milk
1 packet yeast
1 tbsp of the sugar
Let it sit for about 5–10 minutes, until it’s foamy and bubbly. This means your yeast is alive and ready to rise.
Step 2: Make the Dough
In a large mixing bowl (or stand mixer):
Add the yeast mixture, remaining sugar, melted butter, egg, and salt.
Gradually mix in the flour, 1 cup at a time.
Knead the dough (by hand or dough hook) for about 6–8 minutes, until it’s smooth, elastic, and slightly tacky.
Step 3: First Rise
Transfer the dough to a greased bowl, cover it with a damp towel or plastic wrap.
Let it rise in a warm spot for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
Step 4: Shape the Rolls
Punch down the dough to release air.
Roll it out on a lightly floured surface to about ½ inch thickness.
Cut into 2-inch squares or rectangles.
Place them on a greased or parchment-lined baking tray.
Step 5: Second Rise
Cover rolls loosely and let them rise again for 30–45 minutes, until puffy.
Step 6: Bake the Rolls
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
Bake rolls for 12–15 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown.
Brush warm rolls with melted butter right after baking for that irresistible shine.
